Cutting Ball Theater commissioned art pieces from BNG to showcase in our lobby through out the run of the show that had a tie in to The Real Sappho. Please join us in celebrating the artistic minds of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco, Tenderloin Clubhouse! This exhibit explores the concepts of femininity and strength, with a focus on women of color and their lived experiences.

“La Gran Señora”

“Our Princesses”
The media has large influence on how we grow up seeing the world around us. This peice was created to shine light on the small but important representation for girls of color in movies and TV shows, particularly from the 90's to 2000's. From left to right I have depicted three Disney princesses: Tiana, Mulan, and Pocahontas, characterized by ethnic features such as skin tone and hair texture, as well as aspects of their characters from their respective stories.

“My Mom Maria”
My mom is the strongest woman I know.

“Sappho”
The meaning behind the piece is supposed to be the strength of women of color. Despite having little or no power (symbolized by the lack of a mouth), they are still able to overcome the odds and be heard.

Legendary Yemeni Queen of Sheba was supposed to have lived around the same time period of Sappho. She reigned a dream like kingdom.

“La Catrina”
La Catrina is the First Lady of Mexican Día De Los Muertos to honor our ancestors, to remind ourselves that we are not immortal, to celebrate life and death.

This represents the journey every younge woman goes through with traditions and expectations of life walking in between lines.

“Sappho”
The legendary poet from the island of Lesbos wrote about women, love, and passion about 2600 years ago, a time when men dominated culture. With her knowledge and wisdome she promoted transformation and hope.
