Cutting ball's local artowrk curation
In efforts to showcase beautiful local artwork in our newly renovated lobby, Cutting Ball Theater put a call out for local Bay Area artists to submit their work. We received some beautiful pieces and ultimately chose a few for this season to be displayed throughout the run of our shows. We hope this exposure translates to more awareness and sales for these emerging local artists.

Julie-Ann Burkhart
Golden City
Acrylic on Canvas
12 x 24in
$275
I took off 7 years from painting because I was focusing on motherhood. Recently, both of my children have transitioned to being in school full time which has allowed for me to paint again! I am loving it and would love the opportunity to exhibit my art in San Francisco. I recently had an art show in Half Moon Bay, CA and sold 4 paintings. I am trying to build my art creations name again and I thought your Call for Artists would be a great step in the right direction.

Sadie Robison
Broken Hand Mirror
Mixed Media (found glass, found ceramic, found mirror, copper wire, copper foil, solder)
28 x 12.5in
$1200
This piece is a representation of a hand mirror that has been smashed against the ground as its bearer experiences an identity crisis. It's much larger than a human sized mirror; I'm picturing it instead being owned by a troll, ogre, or orcish creature, someone who society views as monstrous. The mirror's owner has gazed at their reflection and they cannot stand what they see. Maybe this is due to dysphoria, maybe they're experiencing guilt after having done something that conflicts with their morals. Whatever the reason, this piece is the artifact/prop remnant of this melodramatic moment, this emotional crescendo, a significant dramatic climax. This relates to my own experience as a trans woman being treated like a monster, feeling monstrous, and struggling to engage with my own reflection.
I've been working with sculptural stained glass for the past twelve years as a way to engage with my Catholic upbringing. I've found that traditional stained glass techniques can be subverted by using found/trash materials, smashed plates and bottles, and that this opens up a lot of room to explore interrelationships between disposability, poverty, and addiction. I have spent the past decade traveling across the Bay showing glass work at queer, diy/punk events, arts and craft fairs, as well as more traditional galleries.
